Insights
- The reason I started bodybuilding is...
I was overweight my entire life and ended up getting teased, made fun of and picked on. I was depressed and had low self esteem. At the end of grade 11, I joined the gym, began to see quick results from training and started getting respect, instead of being looked down upon. I’d seen someone else do a show who I knew didn’t have the heart or work ethic that I did, and knew I could do it if he could. So for my first contest, I dropped 65 pounds in 17 weeks and that’s how it all began.
- The person I most wanted to be when I started was...
IFBB pro Lou Joseph. He trains at the same gym as me and has a very complete physique. More importantly, he’s a great person.
- The person I owe the most to is...
IFBB pro Johanna Dejager. If it wasn't for my “big sis,” I would have given up on the entire fitness industry in 2007.
- The supplements I can’t live without are...
The FUSION BODYBUILDING products I like are AGENT•M, OMEGA•OIL, GLUTAMEND, PURPLE•K, SHUT•EYE and ZEUS. The other supplements I use include waxy maize starch, 100% whey isolate, CLA, vitamin C and of course a multivitamin and mineral.
- The best thing about training is...
Seeing my body transforming, yet always knowing I can still improve and better my physique.
- Two things I could change about bodybuilding are...
First, there needs to be more financial gains and opportunities for professional bodybuilders. In my eyes, if you're a professional athlete, you shouldn’t have to work a 40-hour-a-week job as well. Second, the judges need to give each athlete the opportunity to prove themselves, and give each athlete more time onstage during pre-judging.
- My ultimate goal is...
To be the best ambassador natural bodybuilding has ever seen, and help make the sport grow more mainstream. I also want to be able to do more motivational speaking to tell my success story to the world. I want to inspire others to follow their dreams because I know that they can come true.
- One thing every gym rat should know is...
Eighty five percent of your results will be determined by your diet.
- Years I’ve been training...
6.5.
- The last new bodybuilding thing I learned is...
Being in the right frame of mind is very important. I recently hired a mental coach who has helped me drastically not only as a bodybuilder but also as a person.
- The one question I’d ask a pro is...
How long after turning pro did you wait to do your first pro show and why?
- What I enjoy most about competing is...
The feeling of going onstage knowing I pushed my physical and mental limits to the max. I didn’t cheat on my diet, and I planned and prepared myself the best that I could. Being able to say that if anyone beats me, it won’t be because they outworked me is the greatest feeling in the world.
- The thing I hate most about stepping up onstage is...
If I hated anything about stepping up onstage, I wouldn’t be doing it.
- The first thing I’ll do after getting my pro card is...
Thanking my support team and making sure everyone knows that although it was me onstage, earning my pro card was a one hundred percent team effort.
