Insights
- The reason I started do powerlifting events is...
I became interested in powerlifting while playing high school and university football. After my eighth concussion ended my football career, I made the switch over to powerlifting and never looked back.
- The person I most wanted to be when I started was...
Chuck Vogelpohl. The man is the definition of intensity in the gym. Chuck’s almost 50 and still setting all-time records.
- The person I owe the most to is...
My training partner, coach and mentor, Clint Harwood. Without Clint and the rest of the Anvil Crew, I’d be nowhere near where I am today.
- The supplements I can’t live without are...
Whey protein, PURPLE•K, SHUT•EYE, SUB•Q and FUBAR.
- The best thing about training is...
The feeling of a bar loaded with several hundred pounds digging into your upper back on the squat, when your vision goes blurry in the bottom of a max squat, running yourself into the ground to set a five-pound personal record, and leaving the gym knowing you did everything you could to get stronger that day.
- Two things I would change about powerlifting events are...
First, I’d like to see more unity and less infighting between the three factions of the sport (single-ply powerlifting shirts, multi-ply powerlifting shirts and raw lifting). Strong is strong, and the infighting is keeping this sport from being what it could be. I’d also like to see those at the top be able to earn a living off the sport.
- My ultimate goal is...
To hold an all-time record, and to post an Elite total in five weight classes (One down, four to go).
- One thing every gym rat should know is...
Machines have their place in strength training, but that place is very limited. To get brutally strong, you’re going to need to hit the big three compound movements – the squat, bench and deadlift – and hit them hard.
- Years I’ve been training...
Almost seven years total, two of those for powerlifting.
- What I enjoy most about what I do is...
The camaraderie in powerlifting. Sure, powerlifting is an individual sport, but the respect that lifters have for each other is more important than that. At my last meet, the person I warmed up with, traded pointers with and cheered the loudest for was the guy who beat me by formula for the Best Lifter trophy.
- Four things people should know about me is...
- I’m a political science student at York University.
- I spent my youth practicing Brazilian jiu jitsu, before playing football and rugby in high school and playing two years of football in university.
- The first time I ever bench-pressed, I got pinned under 95 pounds. I now bench over 400 pounds raw, and 600 equipped. Hard work can definitely overcome poor genetics.
- I am a professionally trained choir singer (I wish that was a joke).
- My future holds...
Hopefully a pro total, a top-20 ranking on the all-time list and a long career in the sport I love!
